Comfort zones are great, they’re warm, familiar and secure. Not much can go wrong when you’re in a place that’s familiar and routine to you.
Taking risks however present a chance of failure, pain and distress. We’re wired to do as little as possible to get a desirable outcome. To take the path of least resistance.
Sure, there are definitely some efficiencies doing things to easier way especially if it’s effective.
There are those among us that see great rewards outside of their comfort zones and seek to venture outwards regularly. To keep pushing the boundaries of comfortable is no easy task and it required deliberate effort every time we attempt something.
One way I stretch outside my comfort zone at work is by trying to learn a new technology or own a new responsibility every few months.
Tips on Rezoning ✏️
Reflection: If you’ve passed on risky opportunities before, reflect on why you did so. Was it imposter syndrome? Did you do a lazy risk assessment? Were the rewards not great enough? Was the cost too great? or was the perceived cost too great? Bounce these thoughts of other people too.
Expanding your comfort zone: Pick one area of your life where you’ve slumped into mediocrity. It could be your focus at work or even the lack of intensity in your workouts. Get to the point where you’re done and exhausted. Take a breather and put in another 10%. When we think we’re done, we’re only roughly at 40% of our limit.
Seek guidance: It’s normal for us to settle our standards to match the average of those around us. It doesn’t mean you need new friends! It just means you need some inspiration from people outside your immediate circles to help set yourself new challenges. Find people on public Slack channels, Meetups, LinkedIn, Medium or Twitter who can help you figure out your next steps.
All of my newsletters come from the heart - this one is different though.
Our extended family has suffered several losses of life in the last few weeks due to the devastation of COVID-19 in India.
Life is short and uncertain.
It’s also full of opportunity for you to will your dreams into existence - get after them.
Until next time,
Pav
