Our bodies were made to move. As a species, we’ve travelled long distances to hunt and forage for food. I’m sure not many of you do that these days - I only try and hunt down the best protein powder.
I noticed in the earlier days of the pandemic that I was working longer hours and also walking less. The incidental exercise and stretches we used to do in the office no longer happened. Whether it was walking to a meeting room or standing up to have a chat to someone who walked over to your desk. These mini breaks - as distracting as they could be sometimes, provided me with a breath of fresh air.
I’ve always found physical exercise helpful with my work. The release of endorphins makes me feel happier and makes long days easier to get through. Just to be clear, I’m not really a big advocate for working long hours all the time; moving my body helps me get through those days.
In terms of exercise, you don’t have to do as much or as little that I do, however, I’d recommend doing enough to make you feel happy or satisfied.
For some people it could be walking in a park, stretching, yoga or even some sunshine will do the trick.
Here’s a few ideas 💡
Post lunch walk to a nearby coffee shop
If possible, do your meeting while on a walk
Scheduling in 5 minute breaks between meetings
Do a push up every time someone says “You’re on mute”, “Can everyone hear me” or “Can everyone see my screen?” 😂
Calling a friend after a long time
Do an online yoga lesson
Physical exercise helps me maintain balance. I go for walks, do a couple of weights sessions and train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 4-5 times a week.
It’s important to me but I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea - and that’s okay. As long as you’re healthy and happy 🙂
Let me know if you have anything else to add to the list.
Until next time,
Pav
