Setting resolutions and goals suck.
They’re ambiguous, lack action points and are purely result oriented.
Now, don’t get me wrong, being result oriented isn’t bad. We all need some way to measure our result against what our definition of success looks like. Goals by themselves are meaningless.
Here’s what I’m doing these days:
Pick a goal and know why you’re doing it. This is important when times get tough.
Pick the very first milestone. Make sure it’s small enough to reach in a timely manner yet challenging enough so you feel good about.
Choose a few daily or weekly habits to reach your first milestone. Schedule them into your calendar if you need to.
Repeat 2 and 3 till you get to 1.
It’s obviously a bit more complicated than that depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.
Often procrastination can get in the way of step 3, however that’s for another edition.
Here’s an example of what I’m working on.
Goal: Do a triathlon in 2021 - it can be small but it needs to be challenging.
First milestone: Swim 1km (0.62 miles) worth of laps within an hour.
Habits to help me get there:
Swim twice a week, once in saltwater and once at a local swimming pool.
Swim with a friend at least once a week - a trick to keeping me accountable.
Once I’m able to swim 1km within an hour, I’ll set another milestone which will help me reach my goal of completing that triathlon.
